"what's your next move?" "green energy" "in a world of their own" I really enjoyed getting to play around with different elements in this sketchbook assignment. I decided to go the route of our human relationship with the natural environment and technology. Each of the collages addresses a different idea; one with navigating the hundreds of decisions each day to protect our environment, one with larger scale industries addressing the idea of a "sustainable earth," and one with the idea of getting lost in technology and disregarding the natural wonders that surround us.
All drawings were completed with magazine clippings, online images, 0.5 illustration pen, and black sharpie on Strathmore paper.

"open up" Compressed and willow charcoal on Strathmore Artist's StatementThis past year has been eye-opening, to say the least. I’ve learned more about myself and the world we live in in so many ways, which as a 19-year-old, I feel like I had to. This piece explores themes of grief, vulnerability, and growth through capturing the emotion in feeling obligated to recognize the countless struggles around me, all in order to fully comprehend where I stand in our current society. For this piece, I used willow and compressed charcoal throughout. I emphasized using line and value to create a realistic piece, while employing the grid lines to aid in creating the composition. My artistic influence comes from “Le Desespere” by Gustave Courbet. The emotion captured in his composition inspired the thematic influence of this piece. The thematic influence from this piece comes from my own personal experience with finding where I stand in my opinions and beliefs. This past year, my faith and valued have come into question, but in a way that was necessary, productive, and freeing. Though my mind and heart felt torn apart by the tragedies surrounding us, not including my personal conflicts, I found peace feeling as though I wanted to make a difference. I researched, listened, shared, marched, stayed home, and reflected. All of these activities represent the hand stretching my eyes open. Though they are discomforting, they are shaping me. I’ve felt incredibly inspired doing this previous piece that I plan to continue to use the emotions explored throughout this past year to create more art. It’s important to me to make art that others may find peace in resonating with, knowing that they are not alone. In-progress photos Photos worked from
Assignment 3: Self Portrait. Assignment 3: Inspiration Sketches
The list of items I used for Sketchbook C is: a hammer, a band, a horseshoe, a piece of wall art, a compass bookend, an essential oil bottle, a succulent, a Dixie cup, a frother with its stand, and a jar. I chose a chair that has a unique shape to add in interesting details for the composition. I enjoyed this activity as it reminded me of blending chalk colors on the sidewalk as a kid! I first struggled with creating even spacing and layering of values, but improved on my second drawing when rotating the still-life.
ASSIGNMENT 1: PART 2I enjoyed working with line for this project. When comparing my initial drawings to the final product, I can see the growth and progress, which was my personal goal throughout the assignment. I struggled most with proportions, especially of the box. I also was starting to get caught up in details midway through the process, but reminded myself to focus on the goal of the assignment: to explore line through gesture mark-making and compositional organization.
